Patricia Byrne‘s work is featured in Loose Leaves. She lives in Limerick, Ireland, and writes poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Her poetry collection Unstable Time was published in 2009 and her short fiction appeared in Town of Fiction from the Atlantis Collective. This opening chapter is from The Veiled Island Woman, a creative non-fiction book about an 1894 incident on Achill Island when a landowner, Agnes McDonnell, was attacked by James Lynchehaun. The incident became the stuff of folklore and the story was one of the influences on John Millington Synge in writing The Playboy of the Western World.
